Route 3 Resurfacing in Weymouth Starts Next Week

Paving work will occur from Exit 16 in Weymouth to the Route 3 connection with I-93.

The Massachusetts Department of Transportation (MassDOT) today announced that it will begin resurfacing Route 3 in Weymouth and Braintree effective Tuesday night, Sept. 2. Paving work will occur from Exit 16 in Weymouth for Route 18, to the Route 3 connection with I-93 North and South at the Braintree Split, for a distance of approximately four miles.

In addition to resurfacing the main line of Route 3, the entrance and exit ramps at Exit 16 and 17 for Union Street, will also be resurfaced.

“After a harsh winter season, the pavement quality along this stretch of Route 3 is in serious need of repair,” said MassDOT Highway Administrator Frank DePaola. “We look forward to getting this work started and improving the commutes of our customers who rely on this stretch of roadway.”

As part of this project, MassDOT’s contractor will also be making drainage improvements, guardrail upgrades, and bridge repairs to the five bridges within the project limits.

“This resurfacing will lead to significant improvements to a stretch of roadway that has been in dire need of attention for years. With this project, traffic will move more smoothly and getting on and off the highway in Braintree will be a lot easier,” said Representative Mark J. Cusack. “This project, along with others that have been completed and are slated to take place are a direct result of the Legislature’s commitment to invest our infrastructure.”

MassDOT’s contractor for the project is Aggregrate Industries of Woburn. Because Route 3 experiences high traffic volumes during the summer, work on this project will take place between 8 p.m. and 5 a.m., Sunday evening through Friday morning. The project is estimated to cost approximately $12.1 million. Work is expected to be complete in late fall 2015.

“Once completed, these improvements will provide a better ride for the many Weymouth residents who commute to work in Boston and surrounding areas,” said Mayor Susan M. Kay.
