Shark Sighting in Weymouth, Swimmers Ordered Out of Water
A possible shark was spotted on Lane Beach in Weymouth on Thursday

Multiple people in Weymouth reported seeing a shark on Weymouth’s Lane Beach on Thursday afternoon.
Police said lifeguards ordered everyone out of the water after multiple callers reported a possible shark sighting at approximately 12 p.m.
The Weymouth Harbormaster and Animal Control Officer responded and searched the area but did not observe anything, according to a statement on the Weymouth Police’s Facebook Page.

“Photos and video were shown to experts who could not determine if it was in fact a shark however they could not rule it out,” Weymouth police said on Facebook.
Police said it is possible it was an ocean sunfish mistaken for a shark which is a common occurrence.

Ocean sunfish are commonly spotted near the surface because they mainly eat jellyfish are very large often swim near the surface because they feed mainly on jellyfish. They are docile and not a danger to swimmers, according to Weymouth Police.
