Weymouth Fish Identified as Mola Mola

Officials said they analyzed video taken of the sea creature and could tell it was a mola mola and not a shark.

Experts say the pointy fin at Weymouth’ s Lane Beach Wednesday belonged to a Mola Mola and not a shark.

Officials said they analyzed video taken of the sea creature and could tell it was an ocean sunfish, also know as a mola mola,  based on the movement of the fin, according to Channel 7 Boston.

On Wednesday afternoon, Weymouth Police said lifeguards ordered everyone out of the water after multiple callers reported a possible shark sighting at Lane Beach.

The Weymouth Harbormaster and Animal Control Officer responded and searched the area but did not observe anything.

Ocean sunfish are commonly spotted near the surface because they mainly eat jellyfish are very large often swim near the surface because they feed mainly on jellyfish. They are docile and not a danger to swimmers, according to Weymouth Police.

The shark scare coincidently comes during the Discovery Channel's  Shark Week.
