Weymouth Woman Hiking To Raise Awareness About Domestic Violence
Candace Puopolo Supporting The Elizabeth Stone House

A Weymouth resident will be participating in a three-day hike starting tomorrow to benefit a Boston organization that provides residential services and an emergency shelter to those in need.
Candace Puopolo is getting prepared for the annual Wilderness Heals, taking place July 20-22 in the White Mountains in New Hampshire. Puopolo, along with approximately 50 other women, is raising money through pledges that will benefit the Elizabeth Stone House, a Roxbury-based non-profit that helps homeless and at-risk survivors of domestic violence, mental illness and substance abuse achieve greater safety and stability.
This will be Puopolo’s first Wilderness Heals hike, though as part of her preparation she took part in a practice hike that was required by the organization. As a personal trainer and strength coach for a Malden-based firm, Puopolo is also spending time at her gym, doing exercises that will prepare her for the hike.

While somewhat new to Massachusetts, Puopolo has experience in raising money for non-profits, as she did so in her native Midwest. She has raised over $2,500 for Wilderness Heals, well over the required amount asked of participants. She attributes that success to a great support system, as well as her avocation, where she has raised money as the lead vocalist for the band of Walls of Jericho. Gym members have also contributed to the cause, something she holds close to her heart.
“I have been personally affected by domestic violence and others I know have as well,” Puopolo said. “This is a fantastic cause – to help survivors have a better quality of life is how we can change the world for the better.”
