WILMINGTON, MA — Wilmington residents can take a free online safety course covering the rules of the road for electric bicycles and scooters through a new partnership with the Wilmington Police Department.
The department has partnered with Teen Rider Academy, a program designed to teach teenagers how to operate e-bikes and e-scooters safely and legally.
The seven-part course can typically be completed in an hour or less. Wilmington Police purchased a community membership, allowing residents to participate at no cost.
Police also encourage parents and caregivers to complete the course, particularly before purchasing an e-bike or e-scooter for their children.
"Safe riding starts with education," Police Chief Brian Pupa said in a statement. "The Wilmington Police Department encourages families to take advantage of this free educational opportunity as we work together to promote safe, responsible riding and protect our community."
The program was created by Laura St. Martin, a Massachusetts educator with more than 25 years of experience working with children and teenagers.
Residents can access the course online. To obtain a free community access code, call Wilmington Police at 978-658-5071 or email TeenRider@wpd.org.
Police also reminded riders to wear helmets, obey traffic laws, use designated riding areas and remain visible to motorists.
