Historic Lacrosse Season Ends in Opening Round
Wilmington's took a late lead but the best year in program history came to a close on Tuesday with a loss to visiting Holliston in the preliminary round of the postseason.
It was the best season in the history of the Wilmington High School boys lacrosse program. Unfortunately for the Wildcats, it came to a close a bit earlier than they had hoped.
After years as an also-ran and only one previous postseason appearance, Wilmington the bracket's No. 9 seed and hosted No. 24 Holliston on Tuesday afternoon.
Though Wilmington took a 10-9 lead on a Ryan Kennedy goal with 9:30 to play in the fourth quarter, Holliston ripped off the game's final five goals and went on to a 14-10 victory to advance to face Winchester in the bracket's first round.

Head coach Kieran Kavanaugh said that despite the loss, he hopes to keep the program moving forward in the right direction. The Wildcat mentor said his team's JV team and younger varsity players will work hard to make up for the loss of a double digit number of graduating seniors who helped turn the program around.
"They see what it takes to have a successful season and make it to the playoffs," said Kavanuagh. "All they need to do is follow the footsteps of the upperclassmen. We have a hungry lacrosse program, so they're going to be doing what they can to get back here."
