Home Health Company With Wilmington Office Settles With AG

Maxim Healthcare Services had been accused of overbilling a state program that reimburses companies for home healthcare services.

BOSTON, MA -- Maxim Healthcare Services, Inc., which has locations in Wilmington and five other Massachusetts communities, agreed to pay $14 million to settle allegations that it improperly submitted and received overpayments for services from the state’s Medicaid program. The deal was announced by the Attorney General's office, which brought the charges against Maxim, on Tuesday.

The AG’s Medicaid Fraud Division began investigating Maxim in January after a referral from MassHealth. The investigation comes at a time when 80% of new home health spending is being billed by providers that started doing business in Massachusetts after 2013.

"This company billed MassHealth for services that were not eligible for reimbursement under state regulations," Attorney General Maura Healey said in a statement. "Home health agencies must be diligent in their billing practices to preserve the integrity of this program, which provides critical health care services to low-income individuals across our state."
