WILMINGTON, MA — One of the most hotly-contested local elections in Wilmington in recent years ended with the board of selectmen adding just one new member Saturday. Selectmen Kevin Caira and Greg Bendel fought off four challengers, while Jomarie O'Mahony won a three-way race in her first run for office to fill the one year remaining on the term of a vacant seat on the board.

Suzanne Sullivan and Rob Fasulo, who have been vocal opponents of a proposed drug treatment facility on Middlesex Avenue, had portrayed themselves as independent decision makers while trying to cast Bendel and Caira as part of the political status quo. As recently as last weekend, Sullivan and Caira were locked in a tight race, according to a poll of likely voters conducted by Patch.

While they fell short in their bid to oust the incumbents, Fasulo and Sullivan probably pushed more voters to head to the polls. More than 3,000 people, or 19 percent of registered Wilmington voters, cast votes Saturday, up from 16 percent in each of the past two years.

There were no other contested races on the ballot, with three candidates running for three open seats on the school committee and another running unopposed for reelection to the Shawsheen Technical High School Committee.
