Wilmington Police Honored at AAA Northeast Community Traffic Safety Awards

The department was recognized for its efforts to promote traffic safety in town.

WILMINGTON, MA — The Wilmington Police Department was honored Friday at the Burlington Marriott for its efforts in promoting traffic safety, according to an announcement from police Friday. The department received AAA's Silver Award in recognition of its efforts to promote traffic safety and for continuing efforts to educate and protect Wilmington citizens.

Additionally, Officer Ronald “Butch” Alpers and Wilmington DPW Operations Supervisor Jerry Lawrenson were recognized as AAA Traffic Safety Heroes, according to the announcement.

"Officer Alpers was recognized for not only his persistent efforts in enforcing traffic laws, but also for his efforts to educate the public about traffic safety," read the announcement."Officer Alpers proactively works to identify traffic safety issues around town and often partners with our Traffic and Safety Officers to target distracted drivers."

Alpers also serves as a field training officer.

Lawrenson was also recognized for his assistance to the WPD with traffic safety related issues. Lawrenson works closely with the WPD's traffic safety team to ensure safety to all during the town's Fun on the Fourth celebrations.

"The Wilmington Police Department congratulates and thanks Ofc. Alpers, Mr. Lawrenson, and all of our Police Officers for their hard work on behalf of the citizens of Wilmington," read the announcement.
