Canning Jam and Summer Salads & Sides Workshops this Week

Join Wright-Locke Farm for one of its seasonal cooking-inspired workshops

Wright-Locke Farm is excited to kickoff its summer adult education programs with a fabulous lineup of workshops celebrating the hottest season of the year. First up on the schedule is our annual Canning Jams and Sweet Preserves Workshop on Tuesday, June 27 from 6:30 - 8:30pm. Education Director Rebekah Carter will teach participants how to safely prepare and can homemade jams, jellies, whole and half fruits, and other sweet preserves using the hot water bath canning method. Featured topics to be covered include selecting the best ingredients, necessary canning equipment, sweet preserve making techniques, and proper canning procedures that ensure a safe shelf-stable end product. Each participant will help make and take home a jar of strawberry rhubarb jam to enjoy.

If you are more interested in learning how to prepare healthy dishes that capture the veggies and herbs of the early summer season, consider signing up for the farm's Sensational Summer Salads and Sides Workshop with Chef Karina Hines on Wednesday, June 28 from 6:30 - 8:30pm. This demonstration-based workshop will explore the flavors of summer through fun, delicious, and easy to make salads, sides, and even a few sweet treats. Local and seasonal ingredients will be featured throughout the workshop, adding not only robust flavors but also nutrients that support our health. Some of the featured dishes include: rhubarb, radish, and snow pea salad with orange, mint and pistachio; textured antioxidant rich rainbow salad with orange, turmeric, and honey dressing; black bean jalapeno hummus with kohlrabi; and hibiscus, rosehip, hawthorn, and raspberry coulis.
