Does MA Have Your Money? $2.4 Billion In Funds Unclaimed

The state treasurer holds funds until they are claimed by the owner or an heir. Find out if you've got money waiting for you.

The State of Massachusetts is holding on to $2.4 billion in unclaimed money, and some of it may be yours. Treasurer Deborah Goldberg's Unclaimed Property Division holds the money until it is claimed by the rightful owner or that person's heirs — and many people who have unclaimed cash don't even know about it.

What is unclaimed property? "Unclaimed property consists of unclaimed financial assets such as checking and savings accounts, unpaid wages, securities, uncashed dividends, life insurance policies, uncashed checks, safe deposit boxes, etc that are without activity for a certain period of time," Goldberg's website states.

It does not include real estate or vehicles.

Over the last two years, the state Unclaimed Property Division has paid out over $225 million, according to Goldberg.

How do you find out if you're missing out on money that's rightfully yours? You can search on the state treasurer's website. To narrow the search, include a city or ZIP code. Once you find your property, you can click to claim it and again to file your claim.

The state also routinely auctions off unclaimed assets and valuables including jewelry and rare collectibles.
