Nobel Peace Prize Nominee John Dear, S.J. to Speak in Lexington

In 2008, Archbishop Desmond Tutu nominated Fr. Dear for the Nobel Peace Prize writing; John Dear “is the embodiment of a peacemaker. He has led by example through his actions and in his writings and in numerous sermons, speeches and demonstrations.”

John’s peace work has taken him from South and Central America to the Middle East, and the Philippines to Northern Ireland. He led a delegation of Nobel Peace Prize winners to witness the effects of the deadly sanctions on Iraqi children.

John Dear has received several Peace awards including the Courage of Conscience Award, from the Peace Abbey in Boston, Massachusetts. He has been arrested more than 75 times for nonviolent disobedience for peace.

He is the author/editor of 25 books, including his autobiography A Persistent Peace. He also writes a weekly column for the “National Catholic Reporter” at www.ncrcafe.org.

Fr. Dear will speak about his work to bring about peace and social justice for those struggling in today’s world. There will also be a Question and Answer period.

A reception will follow the lecture. Books will be available for purchase and John Dear will be on hand to sign books and answer questions.
