Savvy Seniors Stay Connected

On Thursday, October 21, the Winchester Council on Aging and the Winchester Seniors Association are presenting their annual one-day symposium and caregivers exhibition. It will once again address with seniors, families and professionals a major senior issue. The topic this year is "Savvy Seniors Stay Connected." The goal of all our symposia is to encourage and empower seniors with basic information that will enable them to be advocates for their own well being. The focus this year will be on understanding and remaining relevant in a changing world. The more we understand, the better prepared we will be. The Symposium begins with a resource exhibition from 8 - 9 a.m. Many service providers will have tables at this event and will feature resources useful to seniors. At 9 a.m., the formal program begins with our introductory address entitled "Reinventing Oneself in Retirement."

This will be presented by Robert Cummings, a long time Winchester resident, who retired from being a convention and tourism executive to become an entrepreneur. His new business is New England Brass & Tool, Inc. where he is owner, operator and retailer of machine tools. This will be followed by four morning workshops. Two will be held from 10-11 a.m., and the other two from 11:30 a.m.-12:30 p.m. Seniors will be able to choose two out of the following four workshops: "Negotiating the World of Communications/Technology," "Negotiating the World of Gathering and Protecting Information," "Negotiating the World of Self Advocacy," and finally, "Negotiating Personal and Social Relationships."

Workshop leaders are respected professionals and leaders in their fields. There will be ample opportunity for questions and answers, as well as breaks to visit the exhibits. A box lunch will be served after the workshops. Following lunch, Sol Gittleman, Ph.D., will present the keynote address entitled "What Is It That We Have That Young People Don't Have?" Dr. Gittleman is the former Provost and Senior Vice President, Tufts University. Thanks to our sponsors and exhibitors, there will be no charge for the Symposium. A small fee ($8.00) will be asked for lunch. Please register at 781-721-7136
