This talk is about the romantic period of music and why it is labeled "Romantic". The term "romantic" has many different connotations. For most people, romantic has something to do with love, yet many songs of this period spoke instead about death and despair. Certainly this in not the usual thing we think about when we use the term "romantic". In addition, sanitary conditions were non-existent and there was tremendous poverty. What is so romantic about that?
So we will look at what we mean when we say "romantic" and why this period got this designation. When we speak of the Romantic period we also must consider its musical innovations. As we walk through this period, we will see what they were, particularly in the music of Schubert, Berlioz, Weber, Verdi, Wagner, Puccini and Chopin.
With a Master's Degree in Vocal Performance, Deborah Moscoso has been singing, conducting, and teaching music for three decades.
