Currently, water and sports drink bottles are not included in the state’s three-decade-old Bottle Bill. It’s time to change that, and help make Massachusetts’ most effective recycling and anti-litter tool become even more so.
Updating the Bottle Bill to include the 5-cent deposit on water, flavored teas, juices and sports drink bottles is good for the environment, and will save our cities and towns money in disposal and cleanup costs.

Since the Bottle Bill became state law in 1983, more than 35 billion beverage containers for soft drinks and beer have been redeemed, making Massachusetts a cleaner, healthier and more sustainable place to live.
But that was before the exploding popularity of bottled water, flavored teas, juices and sports drinks. And because these beverages are not included in the current law, these bottles are 3.5 times more likely to end up as trash and litter.
