Home Composting Workshop, Spring Nature Walk, and Farm Work Day this Weekend
Wright-Locke Farm has lots of spring activities this Saturday and Sunday
Wright-Locke Farm (Winchester, MA) is excited to invite the public to its early spring programs and activities which start this weekend. Consider joining us for our Home Composting Workshop on Saturday, April 8 from 11am - 12 noon. Education Director Rebekah Carter will discuss the fundamental science and components of a successful backyard compost system. This workshop will include topics such as reasons to compost, carbon and nitrogen balance, common home composting structures and methods, and compost troubleshooting (including non-compostable items, pests, smells, slow decomposition, etc). The tuition fee is $10 per person, and children ages 8 and up may be registered to attend with an adult.
Also featured this Saturday is the farm's rescheduled Spring Equinox Walk with local naturalist Boot Boutwell from 1:30 - 3pm. We’ll begin in the 1827 Barn with a little poetry and solstice science and lore, and then head out for a walk around the farm looking for signs of spring. The walk will include some plant identification plus fun and interesting natural history. The tuition fee is also $10 per person; children ages 8 and up may also be registered to attend with an adult!
Can't make it Saturday? We'll be hosting our annual Spring Work Day on Sunday, April 9 from 10am - 2pm (stay awhile or the whole time; we suggest arriving by 12:30 - 1pm). Help farm staff, board of directors, and volunteers get the barns, farm stand, and fields ready for spring activities. We strongly suggest dressing for the weather (layers are usually best) and to get dirty; spring often means damp ground, so consider bringing or wearing rain boots if it's wet out. Bring some work gloves if you have them. If you plan on attending, you can email Kim Kneeland at kkneeland@wlfarm.org (drop ins without emails are also welcome).

The farm also still has some spots available in our April Vacation and Spring After School Programs for kids in grades K - 5. Limited spots remain, so don't delay your registration! Wright-Locke's Youth Education Programs offer children a unique, hands-on experience learning about farming and the natural world on a historic working farm. All of our programs include lessons and activities related to organic agriculture, the environment, or natural science while utilizing the fields, pastures, barns, and wooded trails as our living classroom. Specific subject focuses include soil, compost, worms, plants, Wright-Locke Farm’s domesticated animals (lambs, goats, chickens, honey bees), land conservation, farm history, select wildlife (plants, animals, insects), and more. Daily activities include visiting or caring for our farm animals, cooking healthy and seasonal dishes to try, tending our two youth gardens, and free choice time to partake in games, arts and crafts, and more.
