Mark Hopkins Presents Where the Amazon Begins--Assessing the Health and Future of the Peruvian Rainforest
The correct time for this program is 10:30-11:30 a.m. Please forgive error in Jenks Newsletter.
Earthwatch volunteer Mark Hopkins presents a pictorial visit to the forests of Peru's Amazonia, one of the most pristine, wildlife-rich places left on the planet. He explains how his group assisted biologists working in the area to assess the health of the forest and rivers, and to teach the indigenous people how to sustain an equilibrium that will keep the forest healthy for generations to come
Mark's photography will show the work being done with the region's monkeys and other terrestrial mammals, caiman, macaws, manatees and fish, as well as its fascinating and unique pink fresh-water dolphins. His discussion will cover both the damage that environmental exploitation has caused, and the significant success that teamwork between scientists and local people has achieved in helping bring this unique region and its many rare species back to health.
Mark Hopkins, a frequent speaker in the area, is a writer and photographer now retired from a career in the advertising business. He is a resident of Lincoln MA.
This program is presented by the Education Committee of the Winchester Seniors Association and is supported by a grant from the John and Mary Murphy Educational Foundation.
