Police Log: Drug Arrest and Hit-and-Run Accident

This is an excerpt from the Winchester Police Log from Monday, March 28 to Friday, April 1.

Tuesday, March 29, 9:06 a.m. – Winchester Police stopped a Burlington resident for having an expired registration and inspection on her car. The woman was cited and the car was towed.

Wednesday, March 30, 6:59 p.m. – A bicyclist who was riding along Main Street became very ill. A passerby saw the man and called 9-1-1. He was then taken to the hospital to get checked out.

7:44 p.m. – A Medford resident told police that while she was driving along Highland Avenue, a silver Toyota Camry pulled out of Park Avenue without stopping and struck the right side of her car.

The woman said that the Camry pulled off to the side of the road for a minute and then sped off. The story was corroborated with another witness who was at the scene. There were no injuries reported.

8:42 p.m. – Winchester Police were called to Main Street where they received a call of a driver operating his vehicle erratically. The Winchester Police saw the car drive halfway into the lane with oncoming traffic before pulling into the correct lane.

As the car pulled over, it hit the curb. The driver, Robert McTague of Woburn, informed police that, while he had not been drinking, he had taken three clonopins earlier in the day. McTague stated that he had a prescription for them and they were located in the center console.

Upon locating the prescription, the Winchester officer noticed there were two different types of pills in the bottle. McTague also slurred his speech and was asked to take a field sobriety test, which he failed. After further inspecting the vehicle, the officer found more narcotics, a syringe and heroin. McTague said that he uses heroin.

McTague was arrested for operating a vehicle under the influence of drugs, two counts of possession of a Class C substance, one possession of a Class A substance (heroin) and operating a vehicle with a suspended license.

Thursday, March 31, 12:37 p.m. – While travelling along Cross Street a flatbed tow truck was transporting a van. The top of the van crashed into the railroad bridge along Cross Street. The roof of the van sustained the most damage. The tow truck was able to back out from bridge.
