Rally to End Mass Incarceration on Boston Common

Saturday, April 26, 2014

Rally for Jobs Not Jails

Boston Common Bandstand

1:00 – 4:00 p.m.

Please come and show we’ve had enough of mass incarceration, and that we want our state’s resources to go into achieving  a full-employment,living-wage
economy
instead.  Most of our elected representatives truly do
care about these issues, and want to work on them.  We need to show that
we will lift them up and support them for doing so.   There will be a lively brass band and other great musical guests
including Foundation Movement, as well as uplifting speeches and information about how to lobby for Jobs Not Jails legislation. Also,
all candidates for Governor have been invited, and so far, Steve
Grossman has announced he endorses the goals
of the campaign and will speak on the 26th.

If we do not take dramatic action, Massachusetts will build 10,000 new prison units by 2020, at a cost to taxpayers of $2 billion and a much deeper and more tragic cost in human life.* Our prison/jail system has expanded 300% since 1980, with conditions including solitary confinement, almost no rehabilitative programs, and barbaric practices such as shackling mothers during childbirth.  Meanwhile, the poverty, hopelessness, addiction, and mental illness that underlie much of people’s involvement in the criminal justice system go largely unaddressed.
