Sachems Hockey Hampers Burlington Offense

After losing to Burlington earlier in the season, the Sachems won the second contest, 3-0.

Jed Robinson did his best Tim Thomas impression on Wednesday night turning away 33 Burlington shots, leading Winchester (11-5-1) to a 3-0 victory.

No one was happier for the goaltender than his head coach after Robinson had a tough game Monday night.

“He had a tough one Monday, but he came back Tuesday and worked his butt off in practice. He worked so hard. He was very impressive tonight and I am thrilled for him,” said Spang.

Early on it was a very tight game with the score tied at the end of two periods. Burlington’s net minder, Derek DeCastro, was just as impressive in the early going holding the Sachems scoreless until the third period. It was clear that whoever scored the first goal was going to be victorious  and the Sachems lit the lamp first, three minutes into the third period.

The goal was scored by Colin Edwards and assisted by Peter Troiano and Scott Carson.

“The third period for us was huge. We were not satisfied with a good effort. We refused to lose.  We put it into the next gear in the third period and it paid off,” said Spang.

Senior Captain Peter Troiano found the box score yet again after a coast-to-coast move to add insurance to the Sachems’ lead, making it 2-0 with 6:42 remaining in the contest.

“Peter decided to be Bobby Orr for a minute and it paid off. He is our captain and our leader and just makes plays when he has to,” said Spang.

Burlington had numerous opportunities on the night, but Jed Robinson was spectacular proving why he is one of the top goalies in the Middlesex league. Derek DeCastro had 19 saves on the night and had a very strong game as well.

Colin Edwards added an empty netter with 45 seconds remaining to solidify the 3-0 win for the Sachems.

Winchester evened the series on the year with the Red Devils as Burlington took the first game.  Coach Spang made sure the Red Devils did not beat them twice in the same year, so he used the game tape as a motivating factor.

“They beat us last time so I made the team watch video of the loss and they received the message loud and clear. I am very proud with the win,” said Spang.
