Selectmen Back 2012 World Series

The Board of Selectmen were thrilled Monday that the Cal Ripken Major/60 World Series is returning to town after a three-year hiatus.

Winchester has received the honor of hosting next summer’s Cal Ripken Major/60 World Series.

Sachem Youth Baseball/Softball Association (SYBS) President Bob Nutile went to the Board of Selectmen with the news Monday night to seek their support, and he received it overwhelmingly.

“It’s great news,” Selectman Thomas Howley said. “It was a wonderful event before; it was really great for the town.”

Winchester hosted the 2009 World Series at Robert J. Nutile Field, which will also be used for the games in 2012 from Aug. 7 to 16. Nutile said Cal Ripken officials wanted the event back in Winchester because of its success in 2009.

The event features the best 12-year-old Cal Ripken teams from across the country, as teams have to qualify for it by winning their regional tournaments.

Nutile said he hopes Winchester will come out on top.

“We’re going to try to be No. 1, but it’s going to be tough,” he said.
