Sports Roundup: Lacrosse, Tennis Teams Continue Winning Ways

Here's a look back at the week in Winchester sports.

It's not enough for the to win matches — coach Tobe Okoye wants to see improvement, too.

"If we win 3-2 we want to win 4-1 next time. If we win 4-1 then we want to win 5-0," Okoye said.

The coach should be happy with the team's improvement against Reading. Though the Sachems won 5-0 in the first week of the season and again in this week's rematch, Winchester put up a stronger showing this time.

Four of the five matches were won in straight sets — Christian Boulanger defeated Tyler Bova 6-0, 7-5 in first singles; Ben Davis defeated Alec Tzianabos 6-4, 6-3 in second singles; Jake Criss defeated Scott Onigman 7-5, 6-4 in third singles; and Alex Saich and Eric Meiler defeated Alex Krugman and Rob Devaney 6-3, 6-2 in first doubles.

The only exception was in second doubles, where Mike Laurentano and Dan Boulanger split sets against Larry Tran and Drew Mignosa (3-6, 7-6) before winning the tiebreaker 10-5.

Criss and the pairing of Saich-Miller are undefeated this season.

Up this week is the biggest match of the season, a rematch against Lexington on May 10 that should decide the Middlesex League title. In their first meeting, Lexington handed the Sachems their only loss so far.

Here's the rest of the week in Winchester athletics:

Softball: It was a rough week for the Sachems, who lost three games by a combined score of 37-2.

It started last Friday against Burlington. Winchester was only down 2-0 in the fifth when Burlington blew the game open and went on to win 12-0. One bright spot for Winchester was Emma Morton, who went 3 for 3 and is now hitting .606 with three home runs and 16 RBI.

Woburn followed with a 15-2 on Monday. Morton and Catherine Pitts each went 2 for 3 but the Sachems couldn't overcome 11 errors.

Finally came a 10-0 loss to Reading on Thursday in a game. It was a makeup game from when the team's were rained out last month — an unfortunate circumstance for the Sachems, who now were forced to play Reading when it was coming off its first loss of the season.

Baseball: The Sachems entered the week on their first two-game winning streak after beating Watertown (13-11) and Burlington (5-1), but that ended with a 9-4 loss to Woburn on Monday. Matt Gehrig hit a two-run homer and Connor Steckel had an RBI single in second inning for Winchester (3-6).

Boys lacrosse: Winchester overcame an 8-5 halftime deficit to defeat Wakefield 11-9, and carried that momentum through to a 14-2 win over Melrose. The Sachems (5-4) have now won three in a row heading into a tough game Friday against Reading, which is undefeated in the Middlesex League.

Girls lacrosse: Meg Hennessey scored five goals and Kate Wendell added four as Winchester tied Acton-Boxborough 14-14 last weekend. The Sachems (9-0-2) led by five in the second half and by two in the final minute but allowed the tying goal with 9.7 seconds remaining.

The Sachems got back on the winning side on Tuesday as Wendell
