Sports Roundup: Winchester Teams Prepare for Playoffs

Here's a look back at the week in Winchester sports.

It was an exciting week in Winchester athletics, although not a very successful one.

The girls hockey team had an early lead but couldn't snap St. Mary's 99-game unbeaten streak, three of the eight wrestlers in the Division II state tournament qualified for the All-State tournament, and the boys and girls basketball teams both finished the league season with losses to Woburn.

Here are the details:

Wrestling: Three wrestlers from Winchester will compete this weekend in the All-State tournament at Salem.

Ryan MacDonald (140 pounds) placed third, Nick Chasion (119) finished fifth and Quinn Gregory (112) was sixth in last weekend's Division II state tournament at Marlborough. The top six finishers in each weight class advanced to all-states.

MacDonald and Cashion each reached the semifinals. MacDonald was winning 3-0 with 25 seconds left when he was caught in a move and lost 5-3 to Austin Brais of King Philip. MacDonald will face Frankie Weir of Hampshire in his first bout at All-State.

Cashion lost 2-0 to Zach Thomas of Natick in the semiinals at Divisions, and will now wrestle Division 2 runner-up Jonathan Costa of New Bedford in his first match at All-State.

Gregory, a sophomore, gained some valuable experience at divisions and will now meet Johnny Do of Framingham in his first match.

The top six individuals in each weight class this weekend will advance to the New England regional tournament.

Girls hockey: The Sachems (9-9-2) finished the season with a 4-1 loss to St. Mary's as the Spartans increased its unbeaten to streak to 99 games.

Winchester has a history of breaking long streaks — it ended Woburn's 67-game unbeaten streak in the mid 2000's — and actually took the lead in the first period on a goal by Michaela Chiuccariello, assisted by Tori Carson and Marisa Gehrig.

The goal gave Chiuccariello 34 on the year and increased her school-record career point total to 164.

But the Spartans scored three times in the second period and finished with an empty-net goal.

"We hoped we were going to be the ones to end that streak,’’ Winchester coach Tom Johnson told the Boston Globe. “I tip my hat to them. They took the wind out of our sails and they always find ways to win and they did.’’

Boys basketball: The Sachem boys (10-10) lost to Woburn 48-46 and have now been defeated in four of their past five games. They earned the No. 16 seed in the Division 2 North tournament and will host No. 17 Malden Catholic (10-10) in the preliminary round. The winner of that game will visit top seed Wilmington (17-3).

Girls basketball: The Sachem girls (11-9) had their five-game winning streak snapped by Woburn 49-31. They received the No. 9 seed and will visit No. 8 Brighton (10-8) in the first round of the Division 2 North tournament.
