Winchester Gymnast Wins State Championship

Sophia Makris is a sixth grader at McCall Middle School.

An 11-year-old from Winchester won the all-around title in her age group at the Xcel Platinum State Championships last week.

Sophia Makris, a sixth grader at McCall Middle School, also claimed the state title in the vault and placed second in the beam, bars and floor at Algonquin Regional High School in Northborough on Saturday, March 14.

She received an all-around score of 37.475.

Makris competes on the platinum team at at Brestyan’s Gymnastics in Burlington.

“Her goal for the year was to qualify for regionals,” said her mother Andrea Makris.

Makris did just that. Winning the state title automatically qualifies Makris for the Regional Xcel Championships at Shrewsbury High School on Saturday, May 30 and Sunday, May 31.

Makris also claimed first place in the DGS Northeast Invitational in Hartford, CT, on Saturday, Jan. 17.

This is the first year that Makris was eligible to qualify for the regional championships. She hopes to compete in the Diamond division next season, which is the highest level of Excel gymnastics.
