Winchester Native Sworn in as Army Chief of Staff
General Mark A. Milley will now manage all aspects of training and equipping of the Army.

General Mark A. Milley, of Winchester, officially became the new chief of staff for the Army over the weekend.
Milley was nominated for the position in May. At the time, he was serving as commander of the US Army Forces Command. On Friday, he was sworn in as the 39th chief of staff.
As Army Chief of Staff, Miley will now manage all aspects of training and equipping of the Army. He’ll also advise on military issues as a member of the Joint Chiefs of Staff.

In starting the new position, Miley says his focus will be on better preparing the Army for potential future issues.
“Readiness of the Army, in our professional opinions, is not where it needs to be to deal with a world situation becoming increasingly complex, increasingly unstable, and increasingly dangerous,” Miley told The Boston Globe in an interview.

Miley’s ceremony was held at Joint Base Myer-Henderson Hall in Virginia.
Miley was born and raised in Winchester. He’s been serving in the military for 35 years.
