Winchester Tutoring Group Fosters a Joy for Reading

The multi-sensory and hands-on programs at The Reading Academy help students find confidence in the classroom.

A private tutoring group in Winchester is all about quality over quantity when it comes to learning.

The Reading Academy doesn’t just sit down and help students with homework. Students, grades K through 6, receive one-on-one attention with certified tutors who use multi-sensory and hands-on techniques that are tailored to each student’s individual needs.

Students learn by writing words in the sand, jumping on bases to separate syllables and writing on special gel boards and rice.

“My mission is to foster joy and confidence for reading,” said Winchester resident Amanda Wiernicki.

Wiernicki, a Fifth grade teacher who is currently a stay-at-home mom, received her Masters degree as a reading specialist and is certified in Orton-Gillingham, a multi-sensory and hand-on program for students with dyslexia and language-based learning disabilities.

The Reading Academy began in May of 2014 when Wiernicki decided to use her certifications to help students who struggle with reading and writing.

“I had a little girl working on short vowels back in May and now she’s working on three syllables and longer words,” Wiernicki said.

Wiernicki now has four students ranging from first grade to seventh grade.

“A lot of my students are growing in their confidence and reading out loud in class,” she said.

All of the students come for an hour about one to three times a week. The Reading Academy is based out of Winchester and Wilmington.

“As i’m growing and getting more students, my plan is to hire more reading specialists and teachers,” Wiernicki said.
