Winchester Woman Charged with Hitting Waltham Girl with Vehicle

Victim remains in intensive care unit.

The driver of the car that struck an on Friday, July 15 is facing a criminal charge while the victim remains in critical condition.

The victim, whose name has not been released, remains in critical condition at Mass General Hospital where she is being treated for head, neck and upper body injuries, according to Waltham Police Sgt. Joseph Guigno. She remains in the pediatric intensive care unit, Guigno said.

“She’s not doing well,” he said.

Police have charged the driver, 29-year-old, Laura Conti, of Winchester, with a criminal charge of negligent operation of a motor vehicle, according to Middlesex District Attorney Spokesman Jessica Pastore. Police also charged Conti with several civil citations including operating left of center, failing to yield for a pedestrian and passing a vehicle stopped at a crosswalk.

The car struck the young girl at around 8 a.m. on Friday, July 15 outside of 1083 Main St.

After a preliminary investigation, police determined the driver was travelling westbound when she struck the girl who was attempting to cross Main Street in a marked crosswalk, according to police. An MBTA bus had stopped at a nearby corner, according to NECN, when the accident occurred.

Pastore said the DA's office is investigating whether the Conti was passing the bus when the vehicle struck the girl.
