Amy Cardoso Named 2020 Commonwealth Heroine
Cardoso is an English teacher in Woburn Memorial High School's PEAK program, designed for students who need additional support to graduate.

WOBURN, MA — Woburn Memorial High School's Amy Cardoso was recognized as a 2020 Commonwealth Heroine, Wednesday. Cardoso teaches English for the high school's PEAK program.
The annual Commonwealth Heroines celebration recognizes women from across the state who "perform unheralded acts daily that make our homes, neighborhoods, cities and towns better places to live." State legislators are responsible for recommending women within their districts for the honor. Cardoso was nominated by state Rep. Michelle Ciccolo.
"Amy Cardoso, a lifelong Woburnite, is a product of Woburn Public Schools and holds a Bachelor of Arts in English from Salem State University and a Master of Education from UMass Boston," the Massachusetts Commission on the Status of Women, which gives out the honor, wrote. "She has been an English teacher at Woburn Memorial High School since 2011, working in a program designated for students who have challenges in a mainstream setting and who need additional support to successfully graduate from high school."

Cardoso also co-advises multiple student groups:
- "The WMHS Peer Mediation program, comprised of a group of pupils who are trained professionally by a Mediator to help resolve student conflict within the school.
- WMHS embRACE, the club designed to be a safe space and network of support for students of color, students who are immigrants."
Cardoso speaks Spanish and Portuguese and provides translation at school events and during parent meetings.
