Black Horse Tavern

Enjoy a bite to eat in Winchester.

Black Horse Tavern (Winchester)

Overview: Black Horse Tavern, located in Winchester's scenic center, is modeled after the original tavern by the same name that served the community from 1724 to 1892. Husband and Wife team James and Kim Covino sought to bring back a tavern in honor of the original Winchester establishment. Only a year old, the new Black Horse Tavern is still brand new but it's Old World style makes it feel like it's been around for much longer. After a morning or afternoon of shopping in Winchester center, make sure you stop by Black Horse Tavern for some pub-style grub served up with a modern flare.

Decor: Black Horse Tavern has a definite Old World pub/tavern feel with its brick exterior, dark wood paneling and furniture as well as its extra large fireplace. In the summer time, they crack open the awning windows and you can enjoy the sun as it shines down on Waterfield Road. The Black Horse motif can be found in several places including the signage outside, the front entrance as well as above the fireplace. You'll feel cozy here as you nurse your draft beer and dive into your juicy burger.

Appetizers: Brought your appetite? Kick off your meal with one of the restaurant's Tavern Starters. They have classic appetizers with a twist like Baked Spinach Artichoke Dip, Garlic Hummus Plate, Crispy Honey Buffalo Wings and Panko Crusted Chicken Tenders. Want something unique? Try their fried fresh mozzarella with panko breading and served with marinara, basil and balsamic. We highly recommend the fried calamari with hot cherry peppers as well as the Margarita Shrimp with a tequila orange glaze and pineapple salsa.

Beverages: Black Horse Tavern has a wide variety of bottled and draft beers everything from your standard Bud, Coors and Miller Lite to Guinness, Heineken, Victory Prima Pils, Magners Cider, their signature Black Horse Brew and much much more. You can get red and white wine by the bottle of glass and the selection from California's Napa Valley, Italy, Argentina, Spain, Austria, etc. We particularly love their selection of cocktails including their Mango Bellini, Kentucky Sunrise, Raspberry Martini, traditional Brazilian Caipirinha and Mudslides. Next time we visit, we'll have to try the cocktail dubbed the "Pain Killer" which has two types of rum, cream of coconut, pineapple & orange juice and a dash of nutmeg.

Entrees: Black Horse Tavern offers a menu of pizzas, salads, burgers and main entrees. Most of their seafood is delivered fresh from Gloucester. Salads include a basic Mixed Green or Caesar Salad (served as either an entree or a side) as well as their Pecan Gorgonzola and Mediterranean Salad. Order up a regular cheese, margherita or pepperoni pizza or try something different like their Pepperoncini & Onion, Arugula Parmesan or the Tomato & Basil Pesto pizza. Burgers are grilled and you can get them with anything from your basic cheddar cheese, onions, bacon or mushrooms to jalapeno, Italian sausage, fried eggs and even onion rings. We recommend their Veggie Burger which is downright filling and comes with lots of toppings and a side of house-cut fries. Main dishes include steak tips, sirloin steaks, salmon, chicken picatta, pork chops, baked haddock, fish 'n chips and grilled chicken. Their lunch menu includes a variety of specialty sandwiches including a tasty chicken pesto.

Sides: Ask about the Soup of the Day which may include one of many options including their Black Bean & Sour Cream soup. They also have regularly featured soups like the Essex Clam Coulder and 3 Bean Chili which can be ordered by the cup or bowl. Sides include their vegetable of the day, beer-battered onion rings, fries, mashed potatoes, broccoli and rice pilaf.

Kids Menu: Make your trip to the tavern a family affair! The kids menu offers child-friendly food like chicken tenders, kid-sized burgers, grilled cheese, hot dogs and mac and cheese. You can also order chicken caesar salad or BBQ steak tip plate. The menu is for all kids 12 and under.

Service: This location is very popular so expect a wait for service. Sometimes there's even a line out the door so get there early or purchase a novel at the local Book Ends shop to read while you wait! There is full-service in both the dining area booths as well as the bar.
