Boys' Hockey Falls Short in Super 8

Tanners will not advance to the semifinals, after losing 1-0 to B.C. High Wednesday.

With his team down 1-0 and just under two minutes left in the second period, Woburn’s Casey Shea received a pass in front of B.C. High’s net and had an opening.

However, on the shot, Shea broke his stick and the puck sailed wide.

“When Casey broke his stick, I’m saying, ‘Maybe this is not our night,’” Woburn coach Jim Duran said after the game, “because that would usually be in the back of the net.”

It wouldn’t be the Tanners’ night, as the seventh-seeded boys’ hockey team lost 1-0 to No. 3 B.C. High in the second game of group play in the Super 8 tournament at Merrimack College’s Lawler Arena.

The loss means that Woburn will not advance to the semifinals, as No. 2 St. John’s Prep, which beat Woburn Saturday, and B.C. High have already clinched the group’s top two spots with 2-0 records.

Woburn will face No. 6 Needham, also 0-2 in group play, on Sunday. Check here on Friday afternoon for the time and location of the game.

After B.C. High’s Terence Durkin skated through Woburn’s defense, he passed to freshman Tom Besinger, who scored the deciding goal 10 minutes into the game.

B.C. High controlled play throughout the first period, as the Tanners struggled at times to clear the puck from their own end.

“After the first period, it could’ve easily been four or five to nothing,” Duran said. “Usually we’re the aggressors, but they took it to us pretty good.”

In the second, Woburn came out strong, and right after Shea’s chance, junior Daniel Holland hit the post.

Although the Tanners put one more shot on goal than B.C. High in the second, 8-7, they failed to capitalize on three power plays.

Both goalies were solid throughout. Woburn’s Cam McGlashing had 22 saves, B.C. High’s Peter Cronin 16.

“If it wasn’t for Peter Cronin, there would’ve been a different outcome,” B.C. High coach John Flaherty said.

Flaherty praised the play of Woburn’s top line—Shea, Holland and Holland’s older brother, senior Alex Holland.

“They’ve got kids that are dangerous every time they touch the puck,” he said.

In addition, Woburn got strong play out of its third line, according to Duran, with sophomore center Jared Baker standing out.
