Cummings Foundation implements new timeline for $100K for 100 grants

Letters of inquiry to be accepted through October 1

Cummings Foundation is accepting letters of inquiry (LOIs) through October 1 for the 2017 cycle of its “$100K for 100” grant program. Through this initiative, the Woburn-based foundation awards grants of $100,000 each to 100 local nonprofits every June.

A record-breaking 479 LOIs were submitted for the 2016 cycle, according to Foundation associate executive director Joyce Vyriotes.

“Word has really spread since we began this program in 2012,” said Vyriotes. “We had reached a point where we needed to modify our schedule to ensure our volunteer reviewers have ample time to determine which requests should advance to the next stage of the application process.”

$100K for 100 supports nonprofits that are based in and primarily serve Middlesex, Essex, and Suffolk counties. The 2016 winners hail from 41 different cities and towns within the Commonwealth and represent a wide variety of causes, including education, homelessness prevention, elder services, healthcare, and food insecurity. Seventeen of the 2016 winners are repeat grantees.

Grants are typically paid over a period of two to five years, with some small nonprofits receiving payments over 10 years.

According to Vyriotes, this place-based initiative is designed to give back in the area where the Cummings organization owns commercial buildings, all of which are managed by Cummings Properties, and where its staff and clients live. Founded in 1970 by Bill Cummings of Winchester, the Woburn-based commercial real estate firm leases and manages more than 10 million square feet of space, the majority of which is now owned by and exclusively benefits Cummings Foundation.

With assets exceeding $1.2 billion, Cummings Foundation is one of the largest private foundations in New England. It has awarded more than $140 million to date to local area charities.
