WOBURN, MA — A dangerous intersection that’s plagued drivers here for years may stay dangerous a little longer.

The juncture of Route 3 and Bedford Road was supposed to undergo an $8 million reconstruction starting this year. But the project won’t begin until “about 2027,” WCVB-TV 5 reported Wednesday.

The area is a frequent site of vehicle accidents. In 2014, it ranked among the state’s “Top Crash” locations, the television station said.

In 2021, the state Department of Transportation began planning a redesign and safety improvements for the crossroads, which borders Burlington and is a half-mile off Route 128/Interstate 95.

However, the project is being held up by the need to acquire a piece of land in Mary Cummings Park. The 216-acre green space, which straddles Burlington and Woburn, is held in trust by the city of Boston.
