Junior Kathryn Thifault lost her first set but won the next two in the deciding match.

Kathryn Thifault came back from a 6-2 first-set loss to beat Watertown’s Ariana Zito-Wolf in Friday’s pivotal match.

With the teams tied 2-2, the Woburn junior stormed back at third singles, taking the second set 6-2, the third 6-1, as the girls’ tennis team improved to 2-3 on the season with the 3-2 home win.

“She was very gritty,” Woburn coach Steve Sullivan said of Thifault. “She was mentally tough out there today, and it was huge for our team.”

With the loss, Watertown remains winless this season.

Woburn’s Svetoslava Vodenicharska got the Tanners out to an early 1-0 lead, with a 6-1, 6-0 victory over Watertown’s Marissa Barbato.

Vodenicharska, a sophomore, is a perfect 5-0 at first singles this season.

“It’s comforting having her at the top of our lineup,” Sullivan said. “She works real hard, and she’s a great player.”

The Woburn sister act of Giuliana Malvarosa and Francesca Malvarosa won first doubles, 6-3, 6-0, over Watertown’s Angela Harrington and Majda Abbas.

Giuliana, a senior, captains the team with fellow senior Ali White.

White fell at second singles, 6-1, 6-2, to Watertown’s Melina Kapotsis.

At second doubles, Woburn junior Laura Standley and freshman LeAnn DiMauro lost, 6-7, 6-2, 6-1, to Watertown’s Carolyn Stewart and Emma Day.

Woburn defeated Wakefield 5-0 Thursday. The team opened the season with 4-1 losses to Lexington, Belmont and Melrose.
