Langes Wins Long Jump at State Meet

Woburn senior first in long jump, third in dash at All-State meet Saturday as team places fourth.

is the best high school long jumper in the commonwealth of Massachusetts.

The senior won the event with a leap of 22 feet, 3.25 inches, at the All-State Championships Saturday at the Reggie Lewis Track in Boston.

“I’m happy with the win,” a content Langes said at the meet.

Langes, the Middlesex League MVP this season, also placed third in the 55-meter dash in 6.60 seconds and anchored the Tanners’ 4x200-meter relay team to a sixth-place finish.

Woburn’s Valerio Silva, a junior who led off the relay, placed fifth in the dash in 6.63 seconds, as the Tanners took fourth as a team with 23 points.

Mansfield won its second consecutive indoor state championship with 50 points. Andover placed second with 29 points, New Bedford third with 27.

Mansfield also won the girls’ competition with 38 points.

In the long jump, Langes won with his first jump of the day. After that, he fouled on a couple of attempts that he said would’ve surpassed the meet record of 23 feet, 3 inches, set by Hamilton-Wenham’s Jackson MacDonald last year.

“I had jumps that were in the high 23s, but I fouled,” he said.

Langes took first by 5.25 inches over Saugus’ Olisa Obiefuna, 21 feet, 8 inches. Langes’ biggest threat , New Bedford’s Phito Gondre, finished third with a jump of 21 feet, 7 inches.

Langes, who had the top jump in the state this season, 22 feet, 5 inches, also won the event at the the previous week. He was fourth at last year’s All-State meet.

In the dash, Silva had the fourth fastest time in the preliminary heats, 6.62 seconds, Langes the fifth fastest, 6.65.

In the final, Langes had the best start in the field of eight but was passed by the eventual champ, Blackstone-Milleville’s Brett Buskey, 6.51 seconds, and the runner-up, Gondre, 6.52.

“I was expecting to finish fourth or fifth coming in,” Langes said.

Langes was fourth at the Division 2 meet in 6.70 seconds, Silva second in 6.59.

The duo teamed up with junior Michael McAdams and senior Jake Rousakis in the 4x200-meter relay.

Silva got the Tanners the early lead in the event’s top heat, but two tough handoffs slowed the team, which ran 1:33.31, almost a full second slower than their time, 1:32.45, at the Division 2 meet.

Senior Rodrigo Costa also qualified for the meet. He finished 23rd in the 55-meter hurdles in 9.81 seconds. Costa was eighth at the Division 2 meet in 8.16 seconds.
