Martell's Four Goals Carry Tanners Past Wakefield

Girls' hockey now 11-1-1 heading into final regular-season stretch.

Colleen Martell completed her hat-trick midway through the second period and added a fourth goal in the third, as the girls’ hockey team defeated visiting Wakefield 7-3 Thursday at O’Brien Rink.

Martell, a senior captain, got the Tanners (11-1-1) going early, finding the top-right corner of the twine on a breakaway less than 1 minute, 30 seconds into the game. She added another goal in the first, to make it 2-0, before putting home a feed from sophomore linemate Kayla Smith on a breakaway in the second.

 “She’s a great finisher,” Woburn coach Bob MacCurtain said of his star center. “She’s very skilled, and her line plays well together.”

In addition to the speedy Smith, who had four assists, Martell plays alongside fellow senior Siobhan Duran, who had a goal to start the second, making it 3-0, and added two assists. The top line usually skates with defenders Hannah Magee, a senior captain, and Cassandra Connolly, a sophomore.

Martell had two assists along with her four goals. Magee and Connolly each had one assist.

Wakefield (3-9-1) responded to Duran’s goal in the second, as junior Colleen Doucette scored moments later to cut the Tanners' lead to 3-1.

However, Woburn freshman Ashley Moran answered right back, scoring on a hard slap shot less than 10 seconds later to put her team up 4-1 early in the second.

After Martell’s second-period goal, Moran opened the third with another to put the game out of reach at 6-1.

Wakefield got third-period goals from junior Jacqui Mansfield and Doucette.

Mansfield and sophomore teammate Emily Wood had two assists in the contest, Doucette one.

In net, freshman Courtney Davis had eight saves for the Tanners over the first two periods, while allowing one goal. Senior captain Meg Moore came in for the third and had four saves, while letting in the final two.

Wakefield netminder Shannon Leary stopped 15 shots in the game.

For Woburn, senior captain Kelly Duran and junior Bryana Harron also had assists, while junior Maura O’Brien and freshman Emily Lissner played well on defense.

Woburn returns to the ice to face Watertown (9-2-5) at 12:50 p.m. Saturday at O’Brien Rink. The Tanners beat Watertown 7-0 in early January.
