Mayor Declares Water Emergency for Woburn

BREAKING: Residents are asked to curtail outdoor water use on selected days.

From the City of Woburn

Mayor Scott D. Galvin has declared a water emergency for the City of Woburn effective August 15, 2016, until further notice. This emergency is the result of a prolonged period of low precipitation and drought.

Initial water emergency measures consist of a Phase I – Voluntary Request -- Requesting residents curtail outdoor water use such as: watering lawns, recreational sprinkler use, and car washing on the days listed below:

Monday, Wednesday and Friday, all day, until further notice. Your cooperation is greatly appreciated.

At this time of the year, water usage increases from 6.5 million gallons per day to approximately 13 million gallons per day, causing the City to purchase water from the MWRA at a higher rate than the City produces at our own Well Fields.

If the precipitation and drought conditions do not improve, and usage does not decrease, we may be forced to request a Mandatory Water Restriction, which would mandate harsher water use restrictions. Vast quantities of water are used for watering lawns and gardens during the warm weather months, putting additional stress on limited ground water supplies. Summer is the most important time for us to be conscious of how we use water in our day-to-day activities.

Feel free to share tips with people in your neighborhood and remember that some people might not be aware of the voluntary restriction. So please be pleasant and informative if you see someone who is unaware of the water restriction.

Thank you for your consideration in this matter that affects us all.
