New Woburn Parking Lot May Violate Disabilities Act
The parking lot in Woburn Center does not have curb cuts for accessibility from handicap parking spots.

WOBURN, MA -- A parking lot in Woburn center that has been under construction since November seemingly violates the Americans With Disabilities Act. The lot's handicap parking spots have accessibility lanes that do not go to a sidewalk curb cut with ramp, meaning drivers using the spot would have to go into the parking lot to get onto the sidewalk. The act says access aisles -- the striped lines between handicap spaces -- need to connect directly to accessible routes -- or ramps -- onto the sidewalk.
City Engineer John Corey Jr. said the city is looking into the problem, according to Fox 25 Boston, which first reported this story. "If we have to change something we’ll change it," he said.
New Woburn parking lot is criticized for not having enough wheelchair accessible ramps. ADA guidelines say “access aisles” (those striped areas) must connect directly to “accessible routes” onto the sidewalk.
