Obituary: Benedict F. Lanni, Participated and Supervised Construction of Many Boston's Landmark Structures

Benedict F. Lanni, 91, of Woburn, passed away after a brief illness on Wednesday evening, November 12. He was the husband of Elsie M. (Faretra) Lanni.
Born in Medford, he was the son of the late Bennie, and the late Antoinette (Tofalo) Lanni. “Ben” as he was known to family and friends, was a Sergeant in the U.S. Army Air Corps during WWII, serving as a gunnery instructor.
As a long-standing member of the Ironworkers Union, Local 7, he participated in and supervised the construction of many of Greater Boston’s landmark structures. While in his retirement, he received recognition from the Archdiocese of Boston for contribution to the administration of church and school construction.
Ben was well known for his great sense of humor and love of family. His passing is a sad loss to all who knew him.
In addition to his loving wife Elsie, Ben is survived by two daughters, Mary Jane Lanni of Woburn, and Tricia Umstead and her husband the late Kenneth; and he was preceded in death by one son, the late Vincent Lanni. He is also survived by two granddaughters, Tracy Umstead of Austin, Texas, and Trudy Umstead of Woburn. Ben is further survived by four sisters, Rita Conti, Frances Stahler, Pauline D’Allesandro all of Medford, and Theresa Lunn of Lynn; and three brothers, Robert Lanni of West Medford, Paul Lanni of Medford, and John Lanni of Malden; and he was predeceased by one sister, the late Marguerite Corrado, and two brothers, the late Arthur Lanni, and the late Albert Lanni.
The Funeral will be held from the Graham Funeral Home, 3 Arlington Rd. in Woburn on Thursday, November 20 at 9:00 am, followed by a Funeral Mass at St. Barbara’s Church, 138 Cambridge Rd., Woburn at 10:00 am. Visiting hours will be at the funeral home on Wednesday evening from 4-8 pm. Burial with Military Honors will be at the Oak Grove Cemetery in Medford.
