Obituary: Michael "Mike" Duran, 49, of Woburn

Was an active member of the Irish-American Club

Michael “Mike” Duran passed away early Wednesday morning, October 29th at the Lahey Clinic after a brief illness. The beloved son of Ruth (Foley) Duran and the late John F. “Jughead” Duran, he was forty-nine years of age.

Born in Winchester, Michael was raised in the “Highland” section of the city, attended St. Charles School and then went on to Malden Catholic High School where he graduated from in 1983. While in high school and really throughout his life, Michael excelled in sports. At Malden Catholic, he captained the football and hockey teams, played in the 1983 Shriners football game, and went on to UMass, where he also played football.

In his early twenties, Mike ventured to St. Thomas, where, he and a few friends made their home for several years. While there, he took up employment in the fishing industry and thoroughly enjoyed his stay there. Upon returning home, he went on to work in the family business with his father and brothers.

Ipswich, MA was Michael’s home away from home. Since childhood, he spent many happy days there with family and friends. Loving the beach, Michael could be found greeting the residents and guests of Little Neck. Actively involved in the community, Michael looked-out for everyone and was the gentleman protector of the docks and waterways. Even in downtown Ipswich, Michael had a wonderful host of friends.

Surrounding him throughout his lifetime was family. Michael was most welcoming to all and was extremely proud of being known as “Uncle Mikey.” For his nieces and nephews, the sky was the limit. He loved the times he picked them at the bus stop and enjoyed late lunches together. Attending their sporting ventures was always a pleasure that he never missed. He was an active member of the Irish-American Club, where he often spent time with his close friends.

Michael was truly a wonderful man. His warm smile, infectious laugh, thoughtful ways, loyalty to his friends and family and delightful presence will long be remembered by all who had the distinct pleasure of sharing some time with Mike.

Mike was sadly predeceased by his father, John F. “Jughead” Duran, Jr.

He is lovingly survived by his mother, Ruth M. (Foley) Duran; his brothers, Jay Duran and his wife Maryann, Paul P. Duran and his wife Colleen, and James K. Duran and his wife Lori, all of Woburn; his nieces and nephews, Kerry, Siobhan, Jack, Kelly, Brett, Jennifer, Kayla, and Riley; and his aunts and uncles, Paul and Betty Foley of VT, James and Dorothy Dooley of Lexington, and Estelle Doherty of Woburn; as well as many dear cousins.

A Funeral Mass will be held in St. Charles Church, 280 Main Street, Woburn on Saturday, November 1st at 10 a.m. Relatives and friends are invited to call at St. Charles Upper Church on Friday from 2 to 7 p.m. Interment in Woodbrook Cemetery, Woburn. Remembrances may be made in Michael’s memory to the Epilepsy Foundation, 8301 Professional Place, Suite 200, Landover, MD 20785. Professional services are under the direction of the Lynch-Cantillon Funeral Home.
