Officials Rethink Woburn Common Traffic Flow

A project in the early planning stages would improve congestion and safety in Woburn Center.

WOBURN, MA -- The Woburn Center Study and City Council’s Liaison Committee are working with Woburn-based WorldTech Engineering to find a better -- and safer -- way to have traffic flow Woburn Common. The intersection of Winn and Pleasant Streets, which averages more than 30 accidents per year, is of particular concern. WorldTech has given the government groups a series of alternatives to consider as they move forward to the design process.

Discussion on "fixing" the round-about has been ongoing since last fall, and has the support of Mayor Scott Galvin, several city councillors and legions of drivers who have navigated the main point of access to Woburn center. All of the proposals being considered preserve Woburn Common and try to make improvements without sacrificing parking.

The reconfiguration is estimated to cost between $5 million and $7 million, with Woburn officials hoping to cover most of the cost with state and federal funding.
