Resident Loses Cat in Stoneham Apartment Fire

A two-alarm blaze ignited at an apartment building on Montvale Avenue in Stoneham Friday night.

STONEHAM, MA — A resident lost his cat due to a fire at an apartment building on Montvale Avenue in Stoneham Friday evening, according to Stoneham Fire Chief Matt Grafton.

Firefighters responded to 71 Montvale Avenue for a two-alarm blaze at 9:36 p.m. Friday night, which was located on the second story of a three-story apartment building containing 39 apartment units. Firefighters later determined that the cause of the blaze was the improper disposal of a cigarette

Firefighters immediately searched the building, and found that nobody was home in the apartment. Mutual aid crews assisted evacuating the other residences.

The fire did not extend to the other units, but the tenant of the unit lost all of his belongings as well as his cat. No injuries were reported.

Crews remained on scene until 2 a.m. conducting salvage and overhaul operations.
