Second Person Hit, Killed By MBTA Train This Week, This Time In Lowell

Friday night's incident caused "severe delays" on the Lowell line and left a man in his sixties dead.

LOWELL, MA -- A man who was approximately 62-years-old was struck and killed by a MBTA Commuter Rail train in Lowell Friday night. MBTA Police said Saturday that the man's identity was not being released pending notification of family members, but foul play is not suspected.

Commuters on the MBTA Commuter Rail's Lowell line -- which runs through Wilmington and Woburn -- experienced "severe delays" Friday night after the was struck by a train in the vicinity of Howard and Maple Streets in Lowell. It was the second time this week a person was struck by a MBTA train; on Tuesday, a 17-year-old senior at Philips Academy committed suicide by jumping in front of an outbound train in Andover.

On Friday night, MBTA Transit Police responded to a call at 7:25 pm that a man had been struck by an outbound train in Lowell. The Transit Police said a man believed to be about 62-years-old was transported to was transported to an area hospital with life-threatening injuries, where he was later pronounced dead.

Foul play is not suspected, the MBTA Transit Police said in a statement. The agency is investigating in conjunction with the Middlesex District Attorney's Office.

On Tuesday, Daniel Nakajima was hit by an outbound train on the Haverhill line that runs from North Station in Boston shortly after 7 pm. Nakajima was a senior at Philips Academy in Andover, which said in a note to parents Wednesday that his death was a suicide.

First responders from the MBTA Transit Police and the Andover Fire Department were on scene by 7:25 pm Tuesday night. They tried to revive Nakajima at the scene near 38 Andover Street. He was transported to Lawrence General Hospital, where he was pronounced dead.
