Student Rep for Woburn School Committee Seeks Bigger Role
A Woburn Memorial High School Senior and Student Rep wants students to be involved with teacher evaluations.

Woburn School Committee Student Representative and Woburn Memorial High School student Jennifer Bourque wants a larger role in student evaluations, reports Wicked Local Woburn. Bourque proposed back in September that students should have a larger role in the teacher evaluation process.
Bourque said classroom observation by an assistant principal gave an incomplete picture of a teacher’s performance because the teacher seemed to put on a show for the observer rather than teaching normally.
“I thought that a more-effective way to go about the teacher evaluation process would be to make it more student-based. Students see the teacher every day over time, and they would have a more accurate assessment of the teacher’s performance than the assistant principal, who is only there for a short time,” said Bourque.

The Massachusetts Department of Elementary and Secondary Education recommends that students perform teacher evaluations in its 2012 Massachusetts Model for Educator Evaluation. Bourque also suggested that the assistant principal observes student reactions as well as teacher performance, reported Wicked Local Woburn.
