Woburn Aldermen Could Become Councilors

The City Council is considering filing a petition with the state to change to gender-neutral titles.

WOBURN, MA — Woburn's City Council is considering changing their title from alderman to councilor. The Council briefly discussed the possibility at their Sept. 8 meeting and will hold a second reading on Wednesday.

The last Board of Alderman in Massachusetts was renamed a City Council in 2019, but the title alderman remains in Woburn, even though the body as a whole is the City Council.

To switch to the gender-neutral name, the city will need the state to approve a home rule petition, which has not been an issue for renaming selectmen and aldermen in recent years.
