Woburn Ballot Box To Be Closed On Halloween Night

Communities around the state have put in place additional precautions after the suspected arson of a Boston drop box, Sunday.

WOBURN, MA — Woburn's ballot drop box at City Hall will be closed Saturday night, the night of Halloween, as communities around the state ramp up securities around drop boxes.

The drop box will be closed from 5 p.m. Saturday to 10 a.m. Sunday.

Secretary of State William Galvin's office has implored cities and towns to ensure added security for ballot boxes following the suspected arson of a Boston ballot box early Sunday. The fire destroyed 35 of the 122 ballots. Police arrested a Boston man later that evening in connection to the fire.

Officials are worried "Halloween pranks" could result in more ballot box tampering and destruction.

Some towns have increased policing at drop boxes, either adding patrols or stationing police officers.

Residents can still vote early in person the old Wyman School at 679 Main Street through 1 p.m. Friday, vote by mail, use the drop box at other times or vote in person on Election Day.
