Woburn Building Evacuated For HazMat Incident

There were reports of a hydrogen chloride spill at a light manufacturing facility in Woburn Thursday afternoon.

WOBURN, MA -- A building on 6th Road in Woburn was evcuated just after noon on Thursday as rescue personnel responded to a level three hazardous materials spill. According to scanner reports, one of 24, five-gallon containers of hydrogen chloride being stored on site was leaking.

The Massachusetts Department of Environmental Proection was on scene as of 12:55 pm. Boston Solar and Barbour Stockwell are among the companies listed as being located at the address.

According to the National Fire Protection Association, Level 3 is the most serious classification for HazMat incidents. A Level 3 incidents are "beyond the capabilities of a single state or regional response team and requires additional assistance. Level 3 incidents can require resources from state and federal agencies and private industry. These incidents generally pose extreme, immediate, and/or long-term risk to the environment and public health."

Hydrogen chloride is used in a variety of tech and industry applications. When released, the chemical can cause irritation and burns if it comes into contact with moisture.
