Woburn City Council Appoints Joseph Demers As Ward 4 Alderman

The former School Committee chair filled Michael Anderson's seat and won't face an election until Nov. 2021.

WOBURN, MA — Woburn City Council appointed former School Committee Chair Joseph Demers as the new Ward 4 alderman, filling former Council President Michael Anderson's seat.

Anderson stepped down after he was appointed a state judge in July.

The council voted at their Sept. 8 meeting to appoint Demers. Demers immediately took his seat and will not face an election until Nov. 2021.

Demers served on the School Committee, including a term as chairman, from 2013 to 2019. He also served as a legislative aide and ran for a seat in the state house.

The council took 8 ballots to make a selection, with Demers only winning two votes on the first ballot. On the final ballot he ended up winning five votes to Anthony Langone's two, with one Alderman Jeff Dillon abstaining. Langone is a legislative aide to state Rep. Rich Haggerty.
