Woburn Company Wants To Make Marijuana Safer
Woburn-based Medicinal Genomics is the only company to complete an application to conduct safety tests on marijuana.

WOBURN, MA -- A Woburn company is poised to benefit from the state's legal, recreational market. Medicinal Genomics is the only lab to have filed an application with the Massachusetts Cannabis Control Commission to test marijuana sold for recreational use for microbial and other contaminants. A decision on the application is expected this month.
According to the Boston Globe, which first reported this story, Medicinal Genomics has developed a test that costs about $5 per sample and has specificity of 96.3% for bacterial and 99.97% for fungal contaminants. Massachusetts standards for marijuana safety testing are based on the American Herbal Pharmacopoeia and look for total aerobic colony count, total yeast and mold, biotolerant gram-negative, E. coli, Salmonella, and coliforms.
