Scherer began shooting as a sport in Woburn when she was a child, according to USA Today. A friend's loaned Sarah and her older brother, Stephen, a BB gun, which they learned to shoot at home and at a local range at just 9 and 11 years old.
The Scherer children were home-schooled in Woburn, while continuing to pursue the sport. Four years ago, Stephen competed in the Olympic Games, while Sarah did not. Two years later, after a bout with depression, Stephen committed suicide.
