Woburn Prepares For $675,000 Replacement Of Ice Rink's Chiller

Woburn Youth Hockey's contract to manage the rink is also coming up for bid.

WOBURN, MA -- The city was expecting as many as 10 contracting firms to participate in a pre-bid walk-through of the O'Brien Ice Rink last week. The project, which is expected to cost about $675,000, includes replacing the chiller. Bids are due January 18 and the city has set a first deadline of June 1, 2018 to complete the work.

" We're confident [this work will be done before next season], and we're right on schedule," Woburn Mayor Scott Galvin told the Daily Times Chronicle, which first reported this story. Galvin said he expects the cost to be picked up by the rink's next operator. Currently, the rink is managed by Woburn Youth Hockey, but their 10-year contract is up for re-bid this year.

"At this point, the 10-year lease with Woburn Youth Hockey is expiring. We're very happy with them, but we're required by state law to go out to bid. The intent is the cost of this chiller will be picked up by whoever the next operator is," Galvin said.
